Fashion Wire Daily NY - America's greatest gift to modern dressing received its latest accolade last night in Manhattan when Gap launched a new book on the blue jean. Entitled, appropriately enough, The Blue Jean, it's a glossy 146-page paean to the iconic power of the garment and its spot in fashion mythology.
Gap feted the new book by author Alice Harris with a party in M Studio on Bank Street that featured images from the book and Gap's famed denim ad campaigns including images of Polly Mellen, Natalie Imbruglia, Shalom Harlow and Willie Nelson. Though, with the exception of the hulking Rufus Albemarle and his missus Sally, the denim-clad subjects were absent from the party.
All the royalties from the book will be donated to VHI Save the Music Foundation, and one of America's most dynamic new stars, R&B singer Tweet, took the stage to celebrate the fabric originally known as "serge de Nimes."
The highlight of the evening turned out to be a wonderful performance by Tweet, a singer/songwriter blessed with a slinky voice, tight back-up band and a knack for pithy lyrics.
"I was involved with a man for eight years until he decided to bring someone else into the scene. But I told him, 'I ain't sharing you with nobody," Tweet told the crowd, which yelled its full agreement. And, quite right, too. Why anyone would share Tweet, never mind their jeans, defeats us.
